Doxepin hydrochloride

Doxepin hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used to treat depression, anxiety, and insomnia by increasing neurotransmitters in the brain, but it also has sedative, anti-itch (antipruritic), and antihistamine properties, making it useful for chronic hives and itching, available as oral capsules/tablets (Sinequan, Silenor) or topical cream. Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and blurry vision, and it requires careful dosing, especially in older adults, due to potential CNS effects and anticholinergic activity.
