Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor medication, often sold as Avodart, used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH) by shrinking the gland and improving urine flow, and sometimes for male hair loss by blocking DHT, the hormone causing prostate growth and hair loss. It works by inhibiting the enzyme converting testosterone to DHT, but can cause side effects like decreased libido, impotence, and breast changes, and should not be handled by pregnant women.
